Unstructured & Soft-Shoulder Jackets

An unstructured jacket has minimal padding and no built-up shoulder, so the fabric follows the wearer instead of imposing a line on them. It reads as relaxed rather than formal, and it is the right answer for a lot of modern brands.

It is also the most forgiving thing we make, and for a practical reason worth stating: since the shoulder is the part that cannot be altered, a jacket with less shoulder structure has less of the un-alterable part to get wrong. One unstructured block will fit a noticeably wider range of builds acceptably than one structured block will, which matters when you are outfitting a group rather than a person.

The trade is that it will not create a line the wearer does not have. A structured shoulder squares somebody off; an unstructured one does not, and for a formal setting that can look underdressed. It also drapes rather than holds, so it needs the right cloth.
